“Sacrifices for God and Country” (Worthington, OH)
Perhaps for the first time, the bagpipes will play this Memorial Day Sunday (May 27th) at Worthingway Middle School on 6625 Guyer St., in Worthington. There, at 10:00 a.m. Columbus Christian Assembly will present a short message and music program, commemorating “Sacrifices for God and Country.” Jeff Fleeman will perform “Mansions of the Lord,” a musical score popularized in the Mel Gibson film, We Were Soldiers. It is especially meaningful to Fleeman since his own son, a Marine reservist, has been deployed to Iraq three times.

Church elder John Myer, who himself served in Europe in the later years of the cold war, said, “We shouldn’t think of Memorial Day as a means to glorify war or even to promote agreement with it, but to remember the selfless courage of those who gave their lives. This sacrificial attitude also lies at the very heart of the Christian faith.”

New Church Comes to Worthington Neighborhood (Worthington, OH) Over one hundred folks will be trekking in to Worthingway Middle school on Sundays for meetings of the new Columbus Christian Assembly. In the short term, this will lead up to an open house ceremony set for April 22, 2007. Leaders hope that the church will in time be an asset to the greater Columbus community, beginning with the Worthingway neighborhood. “We try to get everyone involved, even our children” said elder Mike Puskas. “We don’t want bored, squirming teens sitting through meetings. So we put them all in charge of music—in the adult meetings.” Where that might summon images of chaos or ill-fitted music styles in the minds of some, Puskas is non-plussed. He added, “Now these same kids find themselves mulling over all kinds of Christian music and the best way to present it to people. They’ve even started writing their own songs. We encourage them because we want them to know that we take their life with God seriously.”
